Secrets of the Sixth SenseIf someone said, “Wow, you must be psychic!” chances are you would dismiss the comment or chuckle without giving it a second thought. We've all had instances where we followed our gut instinct when making a decision. According to well-known author and spiritual teacher
Sonia Choquette, being psychic is the same thing. Choquette explains that psychic insight is a birthright, and this sixth sense can be cultivated and relied upon just as you rely on your sense of sight or smell. In this exclusive interview, we ask Sonia Choquette to share some of the secrets of her 35-year career about the sixth sense and how she helps clients, including large companies like Merrill Lynch.
What's the biggest misconception about being psychic? That it is unnatural and weird, something unsafe and scary. The truth is that being psychic is natural, protective, and useful. Our psychic sense makes life easier, more productive, prosperous, healthier, and relaxed. And it occurs in all people all the time. It's just that most people are in the closet with their psychic abilities and don't give them the proper attention and appreciation they deserve. Your sixth sense is part of your spiritual makeup. It arises from your heart and is made available through your right brain. Fortunately people are catching on now and realizing it is something to embrace because it makes your life easier all the way around.
What are some of the signs or surprises that people report as they begin to improve their intuition? The first sign is that they start to feel calmer. Intuition aligns people with their most authentic desires and truth, and so they also feel more grounded and real. This creates a sense of inner stability and confidence that calms their fears. Next, life becomes their friend. The more you follow your intuition, the more gifts and surprises in life you receive. Some call it being lucky. It does at first feel like luck, but as it continues and becomes stronger, it starts to feel as though you are on your track, and the track simply carries you merrily along. It's therefore less stressful, more fun, and a lot more pleasant, because the universe is trying to help your life go smoothly and be filled with satisfaction. You must simply open and allow your intuition to participate in the process. And finally people become much more positive because in following intuition, they experience much more success and quicker resolution to challenges. The best surprise is that fear gives way to real joy. That s the way life should be experienced.
What attracted you to your career as a spiritual healer? From my earliest memories I have been psychic. It never occurred to me that one should be any other way. I also came to notice, however, that many other people were not as openly psychic as I, and some had so ignored their psychic abilities they seemed handicapped in the worst way, struggling through life in fear and confusion. My decision to follow my path was motivated by an earnest desire to make others' lives a little easier. Life is meant to be enjoyed, but if your inner radar isn't working, it's hard to enjoy. Once I get the sixth sense up and running in people as it should be, they begin to experience peace of mind and positive benefits right away, bringing with it a lot more joy. That is extremely rewarding.
What are three things people can do today to become more intuitive? First, notice how intuitive you already are. You can do this by recollecting all the times in your life when your intuition did show itself and how it helped you. This puts intuition in a positive and more comfortable light and makes you aware that you are merely going to strengthen what you already possess, much like tuning into a stronger radio signal than the weak one you may be accustomed to. It's a relief.
Second, decide what you'd like to be more intuitive about. Your intuition works best if it has direction. List the two or three areas of your life where you would like to receive a little inner guidance. This directs your intuition and shows it where to focus.
Third, keep a small journal, and every time you get a hunch, a hit, a vibe, a feeling, any inclination of an intuitive feeling, write it down. Don't worry whether or not it's valid. Just notice and acknowledge it by putting it in a journal. The more you notice your intuition, the
more you will notice. This starts a cascade of intuitive insights, which you cannot deny later because you wrote them down. In a week you will have growing evidence that your intuition is back in business and can be trusted.
What is the most common mistake people make when they embark on a more intuitive, or sixth-sensory, life?
To think, believe, or act as though doing so makes you different from others, and therefore you must hide it, for fear of rejection. Having the proper attitude, including a lot of enthusiasm for uncovering your intuitive treasure chest of abilities, is the correct way to begin. If you accept intuition as normal and positive, others will follow. In that way you experience the fun of intuition and invite others to join you. You determine whether or not this awakening will be exciting and easy, by your own approach.
What is the most underrated source of help for people seeking spiritual growth?
The heart. Intuition arises in the heart, and the heart never lies. It does not necessarily interrupt either. You must ask your heart what it needs, wants, seeks, feels, and is trying to share with you. And you must ask it often. But that is not enough. Once the heart speaks, you must listen in order for its guidance to be of any value. The simplest way to hear the heart is to put your hand directly over it and say out loud, "My heart says …,” then fill in the blank. You will be amazed at how clear and direct your heart can be when consulted. Following your heart will always put your life on the right track. It may not be easy to follow your heart. But it will always be easier in the long run than
not following your heart.
How are you helping large businesses like Merrill Lynch?Right now we are in highly uncertain economic times, and many companies like Merrill Lynch are faced with the enormous challenge of keeping their workers steady, confident, and effective through these rough economic currents. That's where I come in. I teach professionals how to access their intuition when they are not clear what to do, to help guide them along when they have no other resource to do so. I do not advocate replacing tried-and-true business strategies. I only assist in adding to them intuitive skills that can be really useful when all else fails, like a backup system or job insurance. The greatest businesspeople back me up-people such as Donald Trump, Oprah Winfrey, and Bill Gates. They are among many others who have attributed intuition as the foundation of their success.
Since we're all evolving, what lessons are you learning now in your own personal growth? I'm learning to relax and enjoy life every day and not sweat anything. I am learning to be profoundly grateful for every blessing, every connection, every moment I get to experience on this beautiful, if a little crazy, planet we live on. I am learning to absolutely love the light in all people and help them learn to love it as well.
What would you do if you weren't a healer or spiritual teacher?I would probably be a rock star. I love music, dancing, moving, traveling, laughing, exploring, being outrageous, colorful, and breaking up routines and ruts.
What's your favorite inspirational book-other than the ones you've written? I recently read a book called
The Shack. It was profound and moved me in a deep way. Everyone should read it. It will change the way you feel about everything you fear in life.
How do you strike a balance between thriving career and home and life? Are there any habits that are particularly helpful? For one, I include my family in all I do and ask for help from them to keep going. I also invite my family to travel with me when I am working. My second daughter was home-schooled throughout high school and traveled all over the world with me while I taught. So did my husband. My first daughter served as my playmate and insisted I travel and play with her away from work. I also take more than a month off a year, two weeks in December and January and three weeks in July just to play with my family. And then, of course, I heavily depend on my cell phone, computer, and text messaging to keep connected. As for a healthy habit to keep me grounded and balanced, I have two: I laugh a lot, mostly at myself. And I pray a lot, mostly in gratitude for the gift of my life.
Can we all live in such a lighthearted and guided way?
Absolutely. Not only can we-we
should accept nothing less. But it requires that we value our spirits, our inner voice, our needs, and ourselves and listen to our intuition without apology or hesitation. That is the beginning. And by doing those things, we can experience the kind of lives that most only dream of.
